Water Cart Operator
Drive a water truck to prepare roads on construction sites.

What's it like to be a Water Cart Operator?
Water Cart Operators drive heavy vehicles that haul and spray fluids. Water carts are used to suppress dust on job sites, clean pavements and prepare unsealed roads for grading and sealing.

Tasks and duties
Starting, driving, reversing, parking and manoeuvring heavy vehicles on construction and mining sites.
Attaching, detaching and operating various water spray kits and attachments.
Using controls inside the vehicle’s cabin to start, stop and control water flow.
Watering trees, turf and pavements.
Identifying and avoiding hazards.
Adhering to strict safety procedures and protocols.
Managing engine power to regulate water flow.
Performing start-up and shutdown procedures and basic maintenance.
Conducting checks before and after operation.

Water Cart Operators need to be experienced drivers with the ability to work autonomously. They work for companies in the construction, roadworks and mining, resources and energy industries. Travelling to and staying in remote areas for shift work is sometimes involved.

Pre-operation Checks are conducted daily on essential components

Such as:

Brakes
Steering
Tyres (including pressure)
Indicators
Oil leaks and suspension
Have defects rectified by competent persons


Implement systems that ensure people are competent to conduct to do their work

This should include:

Instructions
Information about the work
Mentoring and assessment
Toolbox training and refresher training even for experienced employees

Competency Standard This program does not result in accreditation against a unit of competency.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course the participant will be able to:

- Monitor hazards and risks
