The tractor loader backhoe (TLB) course is designed for both novice and experienced operators who may be expected to operate a TLB while performing their daily duties.
A learner accredited with this unit standard will be able to demonstrate knowledge of the functions of the TLB and the start-up, shutdown and operating procedures for the machine.
Entry requirements
Candidates must have a grade 7 certificate or equivalent qualification and code B national driver license if operating on national roads.

Demonstrate an understanding regarding operating the Tractor Loader Backhoe.
Prepare to operate the Tractor Loader Backhoe.
Operate the Tractor Loader Backhoe.
Complete the duties pertaining to the operation of the Tractor Loader Backhoe.
We explain what a TLB is, its functions, list different types of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and explain why PPE is so important.
TLB components
We identify the different components, the external and internal components of a typical TLB engine, explain the difference between petrol and diesel engines, and we discuss how the following components function - hydraulic, electrical, braking and cooling systems, power train, tyres, loader and excavator buckets.
We explain the different types of gauges and switches.
TLB controls
We explain why the operator’s compartment must be kept clean, neat and tidy, the function of the floor pedals, direction control function, steering control and the implementation of control functions.
TLB checks
We list and explain why the operator must perform and complete different machine checks and explain how to stop, shut down and park the machine.
General TLB safety
We explain who is responsible for the operator and machine’s safety and list general and site safety rules.
TLB operating techniques
We explain how to perform all the basic TLB operations safely, list the different operating techniques; explain what the different engine smoke colours indicate, why intermittent revving is not desired and how to start a cold engine.
We explain how to safely load the TLB onto a transporter, what aspects to check for while loading and off-loading the TLB, how to off-load the TLB from the transporter and how to position and secure the TLB on the transporter.
Assessment methods
We conduct a formative theoretical assessment at the beginning of the course to gauge the learner’s initial understanding (novices only). At the end of the training, a summative theoretical and practical application assessment is conducted, to find if the learner is competent; if not, additional developmental areas are identified and suggested.
