Motor grader, or road grader, is a self-propelled earthmoving machine with an adjustable blade between the front and rear axle. The blade is most commonly used for cutting, spreading and levelling of material. MULANI’s short skills grader training course has been developed for the benefit of novices and experienced operators who may be expected to do grading operations while performing their daily duties in the construction and earthmoving plant industries. Skills are attained at the grader training centre at minimal grader course fees and grader driver salary is between R12000 - R27000 month. .
This unit standard forms part of the National Certificate: Construction Plant Operations (SAQA ID 65789). Learners who achieve the course objectives will, upon completion of the course, contribute to the development of a professional community of construction plant operators.

We explain why the operator’s compartment must be kept clean, neat and tidy, the function of the floor pedals, direction control function, steering control and the implementation of such functions.

We list and explain why the operator must perform and complete different machine checks and explain how to stop, shut down and park the machine.

Assessment methods
We conduct a formative theoretical assessment at the beginning of the course to gauge the learner’s initial understanding (novices only). At the end of the training, a summative theoretical and practical application assessment is conducted, to find if the learner is competent; if not, additional developmental areas are identified and suggested.
