Course overview:
At Operators Training School we provide a detailed training plan for our Forklift Truck course giving applicants the skills and practical experience necessary to operate a forklift truck in a safe and compliant manner. This course is designed to provide candidates with the necessary skills and knowledge required to operate a forklift. A forklift is a powered industrial truck consisting of a mast and fork arms or types that can be raised above the ground by in excess of 900mm but does not include a pedestrian operated forklift or pallet truck
The course will arm you with the skills and knowledge to plan the work required according to task instructions to conduct pre-start and post start and routine checks of the forklift truck, transfer and move loads safely including uneven loads and loads at height and carry out shut down and post-operational checks. Upon successful completion of the course, a Statement of Attainment will be issued
A Forklift truck is a powered industrial truck that can be used to transfer materials over short distances. It is equipped with lifting media made up of a mast and an elevating load carriage, attached to that is a pair of fork arms or other arms that can be raised 900 mm or more above the ground. There are various different types of forklift trucks however a pedestrian-operated truck or a pallet truck does not include a forklift.
The course will arm you with the skills and knowledge to plan the work required according to task instructions to conduct pre-start and post start and routine checks of the forklift truck, transfer and move loads safely including uneven loads and loads at height and carry out shut down and post-operational checks. The training will be taught by our highly qualified trainers at our onsite training facility in Brisbane through written and practical teachings. The course content will include, but is not limited to the following;
Hazard identification and control measures relevant to forklift operations
WHS legislation, Australian standards and codes of practice
Working load calculations
Operating a forklift
Routine before and after operational checks
Lifting attachments and their functions
Maintenance and isolation procedures
Shutdown procedures relevant to manufacturer’s requirements
Characteristics, limitations and capabilities of a forklift
Traffic management plan for forklift operations
Communication in the workplace
On successful completion of this training, applicants will have the ability to demonstrate the following;
Identify potential hazards in the workplace including overhead hazards, restricted areas and environmental conditions
Apply necessary risk control measures to avoid such hazards from occurring using the hierarchy of control
Operate a forklift including maneuvering in reverse and forward gears at a safe speed
Conduct routine operational checks and visual inspections of the forklift
Carry out various tasks using the appropriate forklift attachments such as bale clamps, spikes, rotators and fork extensions
Understanding the capabilities and limitations of the various types of forklifts to ensure safe movement of loads within the workplace
Monitoring the weight and positioning of loads to prevent workplace accidents
Maintain all equipment and isolate if faulty according to site procedures
Perform shut down procedures according to site instructions and ensure the forklift truck is in a secured location
Effectively communicate with personnel in the workplace and ensure appropriate methods of communication such as hand signals and two-way radios are adhered to.
Comply with relevant safety legislation, regulations and site procedures when operating a forklift
Understanding manufacturer’s instructions and specifications of the forklift and associated logbooks.
Record all data regarding the maintenance and operations of the forklift truck.
The successful applicant will have the skills and practical training necessary to operate a range of different forklift trucks across many industries within Australia.
